Empowering Youth Peer Educators in Gatsibo: Strengthening SRH Knowledge and Leadership

On 9 July 2022, Kundwa Health organized a refresher training for youth peer educators in Gatsibo District as part of our commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and rights for young people.

Peer educators play a critical role in bridging information gaps. They are trusted by their peers, understand the realities of their communities, and are often the first line of support when young people face questions about health, relationships, and rights. Yet, to remain effective, peer educators also need opportunities to update their knowledge and strengthen their leadership skills.

This refresher workshop focused on practical and sensitive topics, including menstrual health management, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), family planning, gender equality, and sexual rights. Through interactive sessions, group discussions, and role plays, the participants not only refreshed their knowledge but also built confidence to share accurate information with their peers in schools, communities, and youth groups.

One peer educator shared: “This training reminded me why I started — to ensure my peers have the right information and don’t feel alone in making health decisions.”

By investing in peer educators, Kundwa Health is nurturing a movement of young leaders who can break stigma, amplify youth voices, and promote healthier, more empowered communities.

This training is part of our larger vision: a future where every young person in Rwanda can access accurate health information and services, free from stigma or barriers.
